The Los Angeles Times is a daily newspaper covering national news with a focus on the west coast of the United States. The paper was founded in 1881 and has won 47 Pulitzer Prizes, more than any other newspaper. The paper has been owned by the Tribune Company since 2000 and was previously owned by the Times Mirror Company.

History

The Los Angeles Times is a daily newspaper which has been published in Los Angeles, California, since 1881. It has the fourth-largest circulation among United States newspapers, and is the largest U.S. newspaper not headquartered on the East Coast. The paper focuses its coverage of issues particularly relevant to the Western United States and presents a cosmopolitan perspective on national and international news stories.

Contributing to its prominence as a regional newspaper is the thruway extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike to Los Angeles which arrived in 1953; at the time, only four percent of California residents lived west of the Mississippi River, but by 1970 that number rose to 30 percent. Today, with 56 percent of state residents now living in the Greater Los Angeles area, The Times follows trends that are particularly relevant to Southern California.
