1979’s Ode O Minha Famufffdlia e Outras Bruxarias Volume 1 (In Praise Of My Family And Other Witchcraft Volume 1) saw Lee experimenting with new sounds and styles. The album features the singles “Baila Comigo Esta Noite” (“Dance With Me Tonight”) and “Meu Bem Querer” (“My Good Will”). 1980’s Ode O Minha Famufffdlia e Outras Bruxarias Volume 2 (In Praise Of My Family And Other Witchcraft Volume 2) continued in a similar vein, with more experimental tracks like “Lua de Cristal”(“Crystal Moon”) and “Quero Te Abracar Nos Sonhos”(I Want To Embrace You In Dreams).
1981’s Entrar Na Danufffda (Entering The Dance) marked a return to more conventional pop/rock sounds. Early Life:
Lee was born on December 31, 1947, in Sufffdo Paulo, Brazil to an Italian father and a Portuguese mother. When she was two years old her family moved to Rio de Janeiro where she grew up. At age eleven she began taking piano lessons and later took up guitar. In her teens she became interested in the work of Bossa Nova musicians such as Joufffdo Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim. She began singing in nightclubs while still a teenager.
Career:
In 1966 Lee met Arnaldo Baptista and Sergio Dias, who were looking for a female singer for their new band Os Mutantes. The band became one of the most important groups in the history of Brazilian rock music. They released seven studio albums between 1968 and 1972 before breaking up due to creative differences. After the break-up of Os Mutantes, Lee embarked on a solo career. Her first album, Hoje ufffd o Primeiro Dia do Resto da Sua Vida was released in 1973 and featured the hit single ufffdFlagraufffd which reached number one on the Brazilian charts. Between 1973 and 1977 she released four more solo albums; all were commercially successful with several hit singles including ufffdLanterna dos Afogadosufffd, ufffdOvelha Negraufffd and ufffdErva Venenosaufffd . In 1978 she recorded an album with her then husband Roberto de Carvalho; O Estrangeiro features guest appearances from Carlos Santana and George Clinton . The album was not commercially successful but is considered by many to be her best work . In 1982 Lee returned to Os Mutantes for a reunion tour; this led to a new recording contract with Virgin Records . The following year she released her first album for Virgin , Rita Lee , which included the hit single ufffdFascinaufffdufffdoufffd . She would release four more albums for Virgin between 1984 and 1988 before leaving the label . Since then she has released five more solo albums ; all have been well received by critics but have not sold as well as her earlier work . In 2006 Lee underwent surgery to remove a brain tumor ; doctors said that they had found cancerous cells but that they had not spread beyond the tumor site .
