The CBS News division of CBS Corporation is headquartered in the CBS News Building at One World Trade Center in New York City. The network has its origins in United Independent Broadcasters, which was formed on September 18, 1927. UIB was created after Columbia Phonograph, National Broadcasting Company (NBC), and AT&T’s Radio Corporation of America (RCA) came to an agreement not to compete against each other for radio stations in the United States.

The newscast was created by Don Hewitt, who remained its executive producer for 52 years. In February 1963, Walter Cronkite succeeded Douglas Edwards as the anchor of the CBS Evening News, a position he would hold until his retirement in 1981. Among the other notable news anchor staff that have worked for CBS News over the years include: Edward R. Murrow, Howard K. Smith, Roger Mudd, Dan Rather, Bob Schieffer, Leslie Stahl and Scott Pelley.

CBS has been involved in numerous controversies relating to its news division throughout its history.
