What’s Happening in the World of Gymnastics
It’s been a busy few months in the world of gymnastics, with the sport’s biggest stars competing at the World Championships and American athletes preparing for the 2020 Olympic Games. Here’s a look at some of the latest news and results.
In October, Simone Biles became the first woman to win five all-around titles at the World Championships, held in Stuttgart, Germany. Biles also won gold medals in the team final, vault final, and floor final, and a silver medal in the beam final. In addition, she set a new world record for most medals won by a female gymnast at a single World Championships with six.
The United States came in second place in the team final behind Russia, with China rounded out the top three. In the individual finals, Morgan Hurd of the United States won gold on beam, while Mai Murakami of Japan took home gold on floor.
Looking ahead to next year’s Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, several American gymnasts have already qualified for the Games. The U.S. women’s team is expected to be one of the strongest contenders for a gold medal, with Biles leading the way.
