The Washington Post is an American daily newspaper. It is the most widely circulated newspaper published in Washington, D.C., and was founded on December 6, 1877, by Stilson Hutchins and in 1878 bought by John R. McLean. The paper got a boost in 1903 when it became the first newspaper in the country to publish a Sunday edition.[1][2] Between 1947 and 1959, Eugene Meyer served as Post publisher.[1] In 1971, Meyer’s son-in-law Philip Graham took control of the paper; Graham ran the company until his death in 1973 and passed ownership to Katharine Graham (née Meyer), his widow and Eugene Meyer’s daughter; she would later serve as board chairman until 1993.[1] Katharine Graham greatly expanded The Washington Post Company’s media holdings, including television station WTOP-FM (now WASH-FM).[3][4][5]

The Los Angeles Times began as the Harrison Gray Otis-owned Los Angeles Daily Times on December 4, 1881, six months before the city’s incorporation. Otis made the Times a financial success, building a new headquarters, recruiting top editors, revamping the newspaper’s appearance and establishing countywide distribution.
