1. Amazon to Buy Walmart?

(Bloomberg) — Walmart Inc. is in discussions to sell a minority stake in its Japanese business to Inc., people familiar with the matter said, a tie-up that would give the U.S. retail giants greater muscle in taking on a resurgent Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. in the world’s third-largest economy.

Walmart is exploring selling as much as a 40 percent stake in Seiyu GK, its unprofitable grocery chain in Japan, to the Seattle-based technology giant, the people said, asking not to be identified because the deliberations are private. While talks are fluid and may not lead to a deal, Walmart and Amazon see potential benefits from combining resources and technology to better compete with Alibaba’s Hema supermarkets and other digital grocers, the people said.

A deal would mark a major shift for Walmart — which has long shunned partnerships — and recognize Amazon’s growing clout in global retail. The move also underscores how quickly the competitive landscape has shifted as consumers shop more online for groceries and other everyday items.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal appeals court on Friday cleared the way for the Trump administration to enforce its ban on sending federal money to health care providers that discuss abortion with patients, hand out abortion referrals or perform the procedure.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco ruled 2-1 that the so-called “gag rule” can take effect while a lawsuit challenging it proceeds in district court. The administration said it will immediately start enforcing the rules, which have been blocked by lower courts.

The two judges who ruled in favor of allowing enforcement were both appointed by Republican presidents. The dissent came from a judge appointed by a Democrat.
