Major League Soccer (MLS)
Major League Soccer (MLS) is the top level professional soccer league in the United States. It began play in 1996 with ten teams and now has 24 teams. MLS is composed of three conferences: the Western Conference, the Eastern Conference, and the Toronto Conference. Each conference has an unbalanced schedule with each team playing every team in its conference twice, one game at home and one game away. In addition, each team plays every team outside of its conference once. The regular season runs from March to October. The playoffs begin in November and end in December with MLS Cup, the championship game.
National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL)
The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) is the top level professional women’s soccer league in the United States. It began play in 2013 with eight teams, four of which were former members of Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS), the top level league that folded in 2012. The NWSL season runs from April–September with each team playing 24 games. At the end of the regular season, four teams advances to the playoffs for a chance to win the NWSL Championship.
United States Men’s National Team (USMNT)
The United States Men’s National Team is the national soccer team for the United States of America. The team is controlled by the United States Soccer Federation and competes in CONCACAF (the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football). The USMNT has appeared in ten FIFA World Cups, including the first in 1930, and have qualified for eight of them. They have won three Gold Cups (1991, 1992, 2013), four CONCACAF Championships (1991, 2002, 2005, 2007), one Intercontinental Cup (1999), and one Confederations Cup (2009).
United States Women’s National Team (USWNT)
The United States Women’s National Team is the most successful team in international women’s soccer. They have won four FIFA Women’s World Cups and eight Olympic gold medals. The team is currently ranked first in the world by FIFA.
The USWNT was founded in 1985 and played their first game against China in 1986. The team has since gone on to win numerous titles, including four FIFA Women’s World Cups and eight Olympic gold medals. The team is currently ranked first in the world by FIFA.
The USWNT is coached by Jill Ellis and captained by Carli Lloyd. The team’s next game is against Portugal on November 8, 2019.
